Strategic Partnership Strengthens Saudi-China Ties in Archaeology, Museums, and Tourism.
The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) has entered into a landmark strategic partnership with the Henan Provincial Cultural Heritage Administration to foster cultural collaboration and heritage preservation. This alliance is a significant step in expanding RCU’s global partnerships while deepening Saudi Arabia’s ties with China.

A New Era of Cooperation
The agreement harnesses shared expertise and resources, emphasizing key areas such as archaeology, cultural heritage preservation, museum development, research collaboration, talent cultivation, and cultural tourism.
Key initiatives within this partnership include:
- Establishing a cutting-edge archaeological laboratory for research and excavation.
- Strengthening connections between heritage sites in AlUla and Henan.
- Launching joint exchange programs for education and talent development.
- Advancing exhibitions, arts, and culture events, including VR and AR museum experiences.
- Creating a knowledge hub focused on heritage preservation, archaeological technology, and museum curation.
This collaboration aligns with the Saudi Ministry of Culture’s agreement with China to enhance bilateral cultural initiatives, reinforcing shared commitments to safeguarding heritage.
Leadership Vision and Historical Significance

Abeer Al Akel, Acting CEO of RCU, stated: “Our partnership with Henan Province underscores RCU’s strategic commitment to cultural preservation and knowledge sharing. AlUla’s history as a nexus of civilizations is strengthened through this collaboration, further enriching the ties between Saudi Arabia and China.”
Both AlUla and Henan are home to UNESCO World Heritage Sites and hold legacies as former capitals of ancient civilizations. In 2023, over 100,000 visitors explored AlUla’s iconic sites, including Hegra and Jabal Ikmah, known for their historical inscriptions. Meanwhile, Henan, China’s third-most populous province, boasts cultural treasures like the Longmen Caves and the Yinxu ruins.
AlUla’s Growing Global Influence
AlUla has also been named a founding member of the International Alliance of Silk Road Cities, an initiative fostering long-term collaboration among cities of historic and touristic importance. As part of this alliance, AlUla will participate in global forums to promote sustainable tourism and cultural exchange.
Saudi-China relations, officially established in 1990, have deep historical roots, dating back to the Silk Road trade networks. With China becoming Saudi Arabia’s top trading partner in 2013 and a key collaborator in the Belt and Road Initiative, cultural diplomacy has flourished.
AlUla, Wonder of Arabia
Further cementing this cultural bridge, ‘AlUla, Wonder of Arabia,’ a showcase of 236 archaeological artefacts, has captivated nearly 250,000 visitors at Beijing’s Palace Museum, with its exhibition extended to April 11 due to overwhelming demand.
Since its establishment in 2017, RCU has cultivated international partnerships with cultural institutions in France and Italy, fostering sustainable collaborations across heritage conservation, tourism development, and cultural heritage protection.
This strengthened partnership between Saudi Arabia and China marks a significant milestone in cultural diplomacy, setting the stage for future exchanges that will safeguard and celebrate shared histories.
