Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) has reached an agreement with Saudi Global Ports and Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Company to produce three high-tech quay cranes for the King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam.
With two modern container terminals, one chilled and frozen cargo terminal, two general cargo terminals, two cement terminals, one bulk grain terminal, one iron ore terminal, a ship-building yard, oil and gas stations, and a port, the King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam provides full-scale operational services with the aid of high-tech crane equipment capable of handling all kinds of cargo. It also has a ship repair facility consisting of two floating docks that can accommodate vessels of up to 215 metres in length.
Saudi Global Ports is also evaluating the viability of equipping the cranes with the capability of remote operation
The agreement reflects Saudi Global Ports’ dedication to making King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam a globally competitive and sustainable container hub in accordance with the commercial concession valued at SR7 billion. The modern crane equipment will have a minimum outreach of load and unload containers up to 25 rows, which enables the handling of next-generation giant vessels at the highest level of efficiency and scale.
To achieve sustainability and automation of port operations, Saudi Global Ports is also evaluating the viability of equipping the cranes with the capability of remote operation and photovoltaic panels to harness and operate them using solar energy.
With 43 berths, a total area of 19 km2, a throughput capacity of 105 million tonnes, and a rail connection to the Riyadh Dry Port, the King Abdulaziz Port is regarded as Saudi Arabia’s largest port on the Arabian Gulf coast, enjoying a special location as a gateway to international trade.
