DESERT ROCK EARNS THREE MICHELIN KEYS

SAUDI ARABIA’S DESERT ROCK ACHIEVES GLOBAL RECOGNITION FOR HOSPITALITY, ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN EXCELLENCE.

Desert Rock, part of Red Sea Global’s (RSG) The Red Sea destination, has become the first resort in Saudi Arabia to receive Three MICHELIN Keys, the highest distinction awarded within The MICHELIN Guide’s global hotel selection.

Desert Rock is the first Saudi resort to receive Three MICHELIN Keys

The achievement represents a significant milestone for the Kingdom’s rapidly developing tourism and hospitality sector, while reinforcing The Red Sea’s emergence as a destination for high-end, regenerative tourism. Desert Rock’s recognition was announced on September 21, 2026, alongside the news that sister resort Shebara had retained its Two MICHELIN Keys.

The distinction places Desert Rock among an exclusive group of just 155 hotels worldwide awarded Three MICHELIN Keys in 2026. It is also one of only two properties in the GCC to receive the distinction this year. Across the 2026 global selection, MICHELIN awarded 155 Three-Key hotels, 657 Two-Key hotels and 2,020 One-Key hotels.

For RSG, the recognition comes as The Red Sea continues to develop as one of Saudi Arabia’s flagship tourism destinations. The company describes The Red Sea and AMAALA as regenerative tourism destinations designed to combine luxury experiences with responsible development.

“Receiving Three MICHELIN Keys and winning the MICHELIN Architecture & Design Award is an incredibly proud moment for Desert Rock, for Red Sea Global and, above all, for Saudi Arabia. To see a resort conceived, designed and developed here in the Kingdom recognized among the very best in the world demonstrates what is possible when ambition, creativity and respect for nature come together. We are equally proud to see Shebara retain its Two MICHELIN Keys, reaffirming its place among the world’s most exceptional hotels and recognizing the distinctive experience our teams have created on the Red Sea coast,” John Pagano, Group CEO at Red Sea Global.

Architecture as an Experience

The achievement extends beyond hospitality, with Desert Rock also named the winner of the 2026 MICHELIN Architecture & Design Award.

The award recognizes hotels where architecture and design form an integral part of the guest experience and the identity of their location. Desert Rock was one of five hotels globally nominated before being selected as the 2026 winner. The Architecture & Design Award is one of four special awards presented by the MICHELIN Guide in 2026, alongside awards for Wellness, Local Gateway and Opening of the Year.

The resort’s setting is central to its architectural character. Located in a hidden valley between the mountains near Umluj within The Red Sea destination, Desert Rock is approximately 20 minutes by road from Red Sea International Airport.

Its 64 villas and suites have been carefully integrated into the surrounding rock formations. Rather than separating the built environment from the landscape, the resort’s design seeks to create a relationship between the architecture and its natural surroundings, combining luxury, privacy and adventure.

This approach reflects a broader direction emerging across Saudi Arabia’s tourism development: creating hospitality assets where architecture, landscape and destination identity work together to deliver a distinctive visitor experience.

Shebara Maintains Its MICHELIN Recognition

Desert Rock was not the only RSG property recognized in the 2026 MICHELIN selection. Shebara, located on a private island within the Al Wajh Lagoon, retained its Two MICHELIN Keys.

The resort offers a contrasting coastal experience, surrounded by clear waters, white-sand beaches and coral reefs. Its 73 private-pool villas include reflective overwater villas designed to resemble a string of pearls across the lagoon.

Shebara’s offering extends beyond accommodation, with diving and snorkeling, sailing, electric water sports, five dining establishments and a nature-led spa forming part of the island experience.

Together, the recognition of Desert Rock and Shebara highlights the diversity of RSG’s hospitality portfolio, spanning mountain, desert and marine environments while maintaining a focus on distinctive, nature-led experiences.

The Red Sea’s Expanding Hospitality Landscape

The latest MICHELIN recognition comes as The Red Sea continues its expansion. Since welcoming its first guests in 2023, the destination has grown its portfolio of resorts, infrastructure and essential services.

According to RSG, 11 hotels are now open at The Red Sea, with a further six resorts scheduled to open on Shura Island in the coming months.

The development forms part of Saudi Arabia’s broader transformation of its tourism and hospitality landscape. For projects such as Desert Rock, international recognition provides a measure of how locally conceived and developed destinations are being received on the global stage.

Award-winning architecture shaped by Saudi Arabia’s dramatic desert landscape

Desert Rock’s Three MICHELIN Keys and Architecture & Design Award therefore represent more than individual accolades. They underscore the potential for Saudi Arabia’s emerging tourism destinations to combine sophisticated hospitality with distinctive architecture, natural settings and a strong sense of place.

As The Red Sea continues to expand, Desert Rock provides a high-profile example of how the Kingdom is positioning its new generation of hospitality developments within the global luxury tourism market.
