The Green Riyadh Project, initiated by King Salman in 2019, aims to enhance the quality of life for Riyadh’s residents and visitors by significantly expanding the city’s green and recreational areas. The goal is to increase green spaces sixteen-fold, from 1.7 to 28m2 per capita, transforming Riyadh into one of the world’s most sustainable cities.
This initiative is a key part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which includes planting ten billion trees across the Kingdom. Green Riyadh alone will contribute approximately seven and a half million trees to this total.
The project organizers have announced the start of construction for three major parks in Riyadh’s Al-Munsiyah, Al-Rimal, and Al-Qadisiyah districts. These parks will cover more than 550,000m2 combined.

The expansion of green spaces will help reduce pollution, dust, and temperatures. The parks will feature a range of amenities, including 18 km of walking trails, 8 km of running tracks, 8.5 km of bicycle paths, 22 children’s play areas, green amphitheaters, plazas, open-air theatres, sports facilities, and water features.
In addition to the large parks, Green Riyadh is also focusing on other urban greening initiatives. These include developing neighborhood parks, tree-lined sidewalks, and landscaped areas around mosques, schools, and government buildings. To support these extensive plans, the project is building 1,350 km of irrigation networks throughout the city.
