Pioneering Foundation to Accelerate Ocean Discovery, Spark Innovation, and Strengthen Global Collaboration.
OceanQuest, a groundbreaking not-for-profit foundation based in Saudi Arabia, has officially launched in Jeddah. Aligned with the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, the foundation is set to redefine ocean exploration through innovation, collaboration, and public engagement.
A New Era in Ocean Discovery
OceanQuest’s mission is clear: to accelerate ocean discovery, drive scientific and technological breakthroughs, and foster global cooperation. By promoting multidisciplinary ocean research, the foundation will help increase ocean literacy, elevate public awareness, and develop real-world solutions to benefit humanity and the planet.
“As a nation rooted in progress and innovation, we are committed to unlocking the mysteries of the deep ocean for the benefit of humanity,” said OceanQuest Chairman Prince Bader bin Abdullah bin Farhan. “This initiative reflects Saudi Arabia’s bold ambition to lead in science, foster collaboration, and empower the next generation.”
Supporting Vision 2030 and Global Sustainability Goals
OceanQuest will contribute significantly to Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 by spearheading innovation in marine research, building international partnerships, and supporting sustainable development. The foundation aims to invest SAR 3 billion in research and development by 2050, while supporting more than 150 scientists annually.
Furthermore, OceanQuest is aligned with the Kingdom’s commitment to protect 30% of its marine habitats. Initiatives include strengthening the biotech and pharmaceuticals sectors, mapping sensitive marine ecosystems, advancing sustainable projects along the Red Sea, and leveraging deep-sea corals to aid in carbon capture and climate action.
Global Expertise and Saudi Leadership
OceanQuest operates from its headquarters at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Thuwal. The foundation’s Board of Trustees includes Prince Bader bin Abdullah bin Farhan (Chairman), Dr. Fahad bin Abdullah Toonsi, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, Abdulaziz bin Ismail Tarabzoni, Aiman Al-Mudaifer, John Pagano, Prof. Edward Byrne, and Raymond Thomas Dalio.
