The newest flagship container terminal at Jeddah Islamic Port, Red Sea Gateway Terminal (RSGT) is a world-class facility spearheaded by the Saudi Industrial Services group SISCO. It is also the first privately funded BOT (Build Operate and Transfer) development project in Saudi Arabia.
RSGT is an international terminal operator representing a partnership between the Red Sea Gateway Terminal of Saudi Arabia and the Malaysian Mining Company (MMC). The combined assets, handling capacity and experience of these two entities place the terminal operations among the 10 largest container terminal operators globally, with a combined annual handling capacity of 20 million TEU, and equity-weighted throughput of over 10 million TEU.
Located at the Port of Jeddah, the Red Sea Gateway Terminal was established in 2009. Currently, covering an area of 1.5 million square metres with an annual container throughput capacity of 5.2 million TEU, RSGT is providing world-class integrated logistics solutions and port operations in one of the world’s 40 busiest container ports, and serves as an engine of growth for both local and regional economies.
Landmark Achievements
RSGT has been extremely active over the last 15 months, with a number of landmark achievements under its belt, including:
- 10 Year Anniversary Celebration
- A new service, Calling RSGT connecting the kingdom with East Africa ports, which will open a direct line for exporting national products and enables direct imports from East Africa.

Perfectly Located
With a favourable geographic location to become the preferred logistics partner in the region, Saudi Arabia has made significant progress. The country is situated at an important juncture that influences connectivity between three continents, namely Africa, Asia, and Europe.
Saudi Arabia is making synchronised efforts to streamline regulations regarding transhipment, imports and exports to increase economic opportunity. This liberalisation process is increasing the participation of private players in the market. Public-private partnerships are being formed, and the funds generated are being utilised to finance various infrastructure projects. It is also ensuring the availability of the best experts in the field.
Supporting National Economic Growth
RSGT is making a significant contribution to the growth of the kingdom, with Jens Floe, CEO of Red Sea Gateway Terminal, explaining: “The additional investment that will be injected to increase RSGT deep-water capacity will cater to the larger shipping line consortium’s needs and future expansions, allowing RSGT and Jeddah Islamic Port to expand their roles in the regional container trade. Also, the new concession is a key component in the ongoing development of Jeddah Islamic Port as the strategic gateway to Saudi Arabia, and the preferred hub for the Red Sea and East Africa, and as an increasingly important link in the global logistics chain. We are proud that our expanded and modernised port facilities will emerge as an even more powerful catalyst for new economic development in Saudi Arabia and the Red Sea region.

A Competitive Edge
RSGT has a number of competitive advantages, including being the first of its kind among Saudi ports. It was constructed to set a benchmark, pushing advancement in other port terminals around the region, exploiting approaches such as intelligent design and layout, cutting-edge technologies, and value-added logistics and capabilities. It was designed to ensure efficiency within the whole supply chain, meeting the demands of modern-day trade.
Strategically located at the main gateway for Saudi Arabia and the largest hub in the Red Sea, RSGT handles 60% of Jeddah Islamic Port and is the only terminal at the Jeddah Islamic Port capable of accommodating Ultra-Large Container Ships (ULCS) of 20,000+ TEU capacity. It also has the largest reefer handling capacity in the region, with over 2,800 reefer plug points.
“Our people are our greatest asset,” says Floe, “and we continue to invest in the recruitment and training of the most qualified and ambitious professionals in the port and terminal operating industry.”
High Productivity During Difficult Times
Despite the challenging times due to COVID-19, RSGT was able to deliver the performance that it promised to customers, including high productivity, even with the new expanded facility.
“Being part of the vital logistics industry and essential services, we ensure that our customers are offered full support during the limited working hours and limited physical mobility,” says Floe. “To promote social distancing, we launched a new Chatbot service to enable our customers to access services such as Real-Time Container Status, Invoice Generation, Pre-pickup Tickets, Return Depot Details, Custom Seal Number Details, and Vessel Schedule remotely 24/7, to save time and contribute to reducing operational cost and decrease container port stay time.
The health and safety of our employees, customers, and partners is a top priority while ensuring business continuity to provide seamless services. We will continue to play a vital role in keeping the food, medicine, and other essential supplies flowing to Saudi Arabia and region.”
RSGT is set to receive new equipment this year too, and is looking forward to continuing its expansion to create more opportunities and fulfil its vision as an engine for growth.
